Common Questions

Below are some common questions about counselling, sessions, and how things work.
If you’re unsure about anything or want to check whether this is the right fit, you’re welcome to get in touch.

Before We Begin..

What should I expect in my first session?
Your first session is an opportunity to begin getting to know you and understand what’s been bringing you to counselling. We’ll talk about your current concerns, relevant background, and what you’re hoping support might help with. The session also includes an overview of how counselling works, confidentiality, and your rights and responsibilities, so you can make an informed decision about continuing. There’s no expectation to share everything at once — the pace and focus of the session are guided by you. You’re welcome to ask questions at any point and raise anything that feels important or unclear.

Is counselling only for people in crisis?
No. You don’t need to have something “wrong” to benefit from counselling.
Many people seek support during periods of stress, change, or uncertainty, or simply to gain clarity, perspective, and support. Counselling can also be a preventative space — a way to reflect, build skills, and strengthen coping before things feel overwhelming. It’s not only for moments of crisis, but for anyone wanting to take care of their mental and emotional wellbeing.

How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number of sessions, as counselling needs vary from person to person. The length of time depends on factors such as the nature of your concerns, your goals, and how things progress over time. We’ll work collaboratively to clarify goals and regularly review how counselling is going, adjusting the approach as needed to ensure the support remains appropriate and helpful. You are free to pause, continue, or conclude counselling at any point.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on?

No. Many people start counselling feeling unsure or overwhelmed.
We can take time to clarify what’s going on and what might be helpful, at your pace.

Are you a member of a counsellors' association?
Yes, Action Potential Counselling is a proud member of the Certified Practicing Counsellors Australia (CPCA). Membership ensures that we maintain the highest standards of ethical practice, care and professional development. You can learn more about CPCA and its values by visiting their website at https://cpcaus.com.au/.

Online Counselling..

How do online sessions work?
Online counselling takes place via a secure video platform.
You’ll need a private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.

What happens if the technology doesn’t work? Occasionally, technical issues can occur. If this happens, we’ll pause and troubleshoot where possible. If the issue can’t be resolved, we’ll discuss alternative options, such as rescheduling or completing the session another way where appropriate.

What if I don’t feel comfortable on video or need to turn my camera off?
It’s okay if online counselling feels unfamiliar or uncomfortable at first — many people take some time to adjust. Comfort, safety, and choice are important parts of the process, and you’re encouraged to raise any concerns about how sessions feel. In most cases, sessions are conducted with cameras on to support connection and communication but if you feel the need to briefly turn your camera off, you are absolutely within your right to do so,

Online Counselling Continued.

Is online counselling confidential?
Yes. Online counselling is conducted using a secure telehealth platform and follows the same confidentiality and privacy standards as in-person sessions, within legal and ethical limits. While all reasonable precautions are taken, electronic communication (including telehealth and email) can carry some privacy risks. Secure platforms are used for online sessions, and your information is not shared electronically without your consent. Confidentiality, privacy considerations, and their limits are explained clearly before counselling begins so you can make an informed decision about participation.

Are online sessions as effective as in-person counselling?
Yes. Research shows online counselling can be just as effective for many concerns, particularly when there is consistency and a good therapeutic fit.

Can I move between online and in-person sessions?
Where availability allows, yes.
Many clients shift between formats depending on life circumstances, travel, or preference.

Walk-and-Talk..

Where do walk-and-talk sessions take place?
Sessions are held outdoors in suitable locations around Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.
Details are confirmed before your session.

What should I wear or bring?
Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for walking outdoors are recommended. You may also want to bring water, sun protection, or weather-appropriate items depending on conditions.

What happens if the weather is poor?
If conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll discuss alternatives such as rescheduling or moving the session online.

Is walk-and-talk suitable for everyone?
Not always. While walk-and-talk can be helpful for many people, some concerns are better supported through seated or online sessions. Suitability is considered collaboratively, with your needs, preferences, and safety in mind.

How fast do we walk?
Sessions are conducted at a comfortable, conversational pace and can be adjusted as needed. The focus is on the conversation rather than the walk, and we can pause or slow down at any time.

Walk-and-Talk Continued.

Is walk-and-talk as effective as seated counselling?
For many people, walk-and-talk counselling can be just as effective as seated sessions, particularly for work around stress, regulation, values, and perspective-taking. The approach is tailored to what works best for you.

What about privacy in public spaces?
Locations are selected to minimise interruptions and maintain reasonable privacy. While complete privacy cannot be guaranteed in public settings, care is taken to choose quieter areas, and we can adjust as needed if others are nearby.

What happens if something unexpected comes up during the walk?
If an interruption, safety concern, or unexpected situation arises, we’ll pause or adjust the session as needed. Your wellbeing is the priority, and sessions can be redirected, shortened, or rescheduled if appropriate

What if we run into someone I know during a walk-and-talk session?
If we encounter someone you know, we’ll follow your lead to maintain your privacy. This may involve a brief pause, changing direction, or a neutral acknowledgement if needed. These situations are handled discreetly, with your confidentiality and comfort as the priority.

Fees, Cancellations & Boundaries

How do cancellations and rescheduling work?
Appointments are reserved specifically for you. If you need to cancel or reschedule, at least 24 hours’ notice is appreciated where possible. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed appointments, may incur a cancellation fee. This helps ensure fairness and availability for all clients.

Late Arrivals
Sessions begin and end at the scheduled time. If you arrive late, the session will still conclude at the original end time to respect the time of others.
If you anticipate being late, please let me know where possible. You are welcome to use the remaining session time in whatever way feels most helpful to you.
If a significant portion of the session is missed, the full session fee may still apply.

We understand that unexpected circumstances can arise. If something unforeseen occurs, please get in touch as soon as possible so we can discuss your situation.

What are the boundaries around contact outside of sessions?
Counselling sessions take place within agreed appointment times and professional boundaries. Outside of sessions, contact is generally limited to scheduling or administrative matters unless otherwise discussed. This helps maintain a safe, respectful, and consistent therapeutic relationship.

Are counselling sessions confidential and professionally regulated?
Yes. Action Potential Counselling provides counselling and therapeutic support in line with professional and ethical standards set by Certified Practicing Counsellors Australia (CPCA). Sessions are confidential within legal and ethical limits, which are explained clearly before we begin.

Is this a crisis or emergency service?
No. Counselling services are not a substitute for medical, psychiatric, or emergency care. If you are experiencing acute distress, thoughts of self-harm, or are at immediate risk, please contact emergency services on 000, or reach out to Lifeline (13 11 14) or another local crisis support service.
